Running a small business in New Zealand can sometimes feel like you’re trying to navigate a maze all on your own. But the happy news is: you’re not alone! One of the most powerful tools at your disposal is collaboration. At FixHR, we believe in the strength of working together, and we’ve seen firsthand how networking can transform businesses, business owners and business ownership. We have seen its positive impact on some of our clients as we introduce them to people in our own network. And we have benefitted enormously from experienced, magnanimous friends and collaborators.
Let’s dive into why collaboration is a game-changer for small business owners, and we will see if I can’t inspire you even just a little bit to reach out a bit more than you have done in the past.
Why Collaboration Matters
Collaboration isn’t just a buzzword; it’s a strategic approach that can lead to significant growth and innovation. When you collaborate, you tap into a wealth of knowledge, resources, and opportunities that you would not have access to on your own. This is as true if you are mixing with others in your own industry, as if you are the only one from your industry around the table or in the room. Here are a few reasons why collaboration is essential:
- Shared Knowledge and Expertise: When you collaborate with other businesses or professionals, you gain access to their expertise and experience. This can be incredibly valuable, especially if you’re facing challenges that are outside your area of expertise. For example, partnering with an HR firm like FixHR can help you navigate complex employment laws and improve your HR practices. Any expert with a sharing, collaborative mindset will give away knowledge and expertise in the right setting.
- Increased Innovation: Collaboration often leads to fresh ideas and innovative solutions. When different perspectives come together, it sparks creativity and can lead to breakthroughs that you are unlikely to have achieved on your own. This is particularly important in a small business setting where innovation can set you apart from the competition.
- Resource Sharing: Small businesses often operate with limited resources. By collaborating, you can share resources such as technology, marketing efforts, office space, time saving tips and tricks, etc. This not only reduces costs but also maximizes efficiency.
- Expanded Network:Â Networking is a key component of collaboration. By building relationships with other business owners, industry experts, and potential clients, you expand your network and open up new opportunities for growth. A strong network can provide support, referrals, and valuable connections.
Practical Tips for Effective Collaboration
So, how can you start collaborating effectively? We wouldn’t want to leave you hanging! So here are some practical tips to get you started:
- Identify Potential Partners: Invest a little bit of time to look for businesses or professionals whose strengths complement your own. This could be within your industry or in a related field. For example, if you’re a café owner, collaborating with a local bakery or a marketing agency could be beneficial. In FixHR I have intentionally sought out service providers who look after small businesses with 3-15 staff. So I partner with business brokers, accountants and bookkeepers, immigration consultants and business coaches because we have the same kinds of clients.
- Build Relationships: Networking events, industry conferences, and local business groups are great places to meet potential collaborators. Don’t be afraid to reach out and start a conversation. Building genuine relationships is key to successful collaboration. I am a proud member of BNI. If you can manage an early start you could go around visiting local BNI meetings and see who you click with, and who you could collaborate with beyond a weekly formal networking meeting.
- Set Clear Goals: Before entering into a collaboration, make sure you have clear goals and expectations. What do you hope to achieve? How will you measure success? Having a clear plan in place will help ensure that both parties are on the same page. I would say you are likely to experience more success long term if you are in a position to be open and generous with your time and/or expertise. People sense when others are on the take and put up barriers. Equally they sense when someone is genuine.
- Communicate Openly: Effective communication is crucial for any collaboration. Be open and honest about your needs, expectations, and any challenges you face. Regular check-ins and updates are important to keep the collaboration on track. For this reason, choose people you like to be around to collaborate with!
- Leverage Technology: Use technology to facilitate collaboration. Tools like project management software, Teams or Zoon and shared document platforms can make it easier to work together, even if you’re not in the same location.
Collaboration and networking are powerful strategies that can really help small businesses shift gear and thrive. By working together, sharing resources, and leveraging each other’s strengths, we can all overcome challenges (and what a year of challenges we have had) and achieve greater success. At FixHR, we’re big believers in the power of collaboration, and we’re here to support you every step of the way.
